Plug Depth

Plugs can be made to various depths (thickness) if requested. The depth of plugs is measured in millimeters. Plugs with a diameter between 10mm and 20mm tend to look best with a depth of approximately 13 mm. Larger diameter plugs look best with a depth around 12mm. This also helps to keep the weight down and the narrower profile tends to make them less likely catch on objects. If you have a specific depth in mind, contact us for more information.

Styles: Profiles

Double Flared

The most common style of plug, double flared plugs are the least likely to fall out. Flared plugs are measured by their diameter at the center, and are approximately 1mm wider at the edges.

Flareless

Easily Inserted, but easier to lose. Flareless plugs are essentially cylinders of wood. Best suited for plugs 1" diameter or larger.

Flareless Grooved

Notched plugs offer a bit more stability as they are notched to facilitate the use of O rings to keep the plug in place. O rings are provided. There is an additional fee for grooved plugs depending on size. Contact us for more information.

Single Flared

Single flared plugs are easy to insert like flareless plugs, but have more of the look and stability of flared plugs. One side is grooved for O rings. O rings are provided. There is an additional fee for single flared plugs depending on size. Contact us for more information.

Styles: Faces

Flat

Flat faced plugs are the most common face style, and offer a very crisp, tidy look.

Tunnel

Tunnels have a hole in the middle that can vary in diameter in larger gauges. Tunnels usually have a tapered hole on one side and a flat faced hole on the other, offering two very distinct looks in the same piece of jewelry. There is occasionally a fee for tunnels if a specific size and style of holes are requested. Contact us for more information.

Domed

Domed plugs have a slightly convex face on one side. This gives a slightly raised, rounded appearance. The other side is flat faced, offering two very distinct looks in the same piece of jewelry. There is an additional fee for domed plugs depending on size. Contact us for more information.

Bowl

Bowl faced plugs have a concave face on one side, Giving a scooped or indented look. The other side is flat faced, offering two very distinct looks in the same piece of jewelry. There is an additional fee for bowl face plugs depending on size. Contact us for more information.

Turned

Turned faces are available for both flat faced plugs and tunnels. Number and shape of grooves can vary depending upon request and plug size. There is an additional fee for grooved plugs depending on size and design. Contact us for more information.

Why Measure in Millimeters?

We can use whatever system of measurement for jewelry size you require, but the standard unit of measurement we use is millimeters (mm). While fractions of an inch are the standard unit of measurement in most of the industry here in North America, Europe has embraced the metric system. Why? Well, the fractions can get rather complicated, particularly when when you are looking for something in an obscure 'in-between' size.

For example, lets say you want jewelry with a diameter greater than 9/16" but smaller than 5/8". The fractional measurement for the size between these 2 examples would be 19/32". Now, knowing that 9/16" is approximately 14mm and 5/8" is roughly 16mm, 15mm is the size you are aiming for. In short, its a lot easier to remember 15mm than 19/32".

Now put yourself in our shoes: we need to remember lots of numbers for several different orders at a given time. The reason we measure in millimeters is that it makes things easier for both yourself and for us as well.

If you need to convert from inches to millimeters (or vice versa), we have provided a conversion chart for your use. We can make plugs in diameters in between those shown here as well.

Some conversions have been rounded off to the nearest millimeter to keep things simple. Conversions from inches to millimeters are still accurate within .5mm when rounded off in this manner, so you won't notice much difference in diameter between our plugs and those of another manufacturer (provided the jewelry has been measured properly).
